Residential Building at Magoula, Sparta, Lakonia

The residence unfolds in the shadow of the ridgeline of Mount Taygetus, within a landscape that has served as a reference point for centuries for the inhabitants of the Spartan plain. The design aims to create an architectural space where the view, light, and movement define the user’s experience within this environment.

The composition is based on the simultaneous fragmentation and scaling of volumes, allowing the residence to engage in dialogue with both the ground and the sky. The white, single-story main volume extends horizontally on a leveled ground, aligning itself with the horizontal base of the mountain range. At the same time, it interlocks with the vertical volumes that penetrate the sky, seeking, at every angle, a composition that resonates with the ridgeline establishing a clear relationship with the natural topography.

At the entrance, a skylight punctures the slab, directing the gaze upwards and allowing light to infiltrate the otherwise enclosed structure. This aperture invites the sky to become an integral part of the daily spatial experience. Guiding this experience is the sequence of steel pergola beams, which begin at the entrance and extend into the interior. As they traverse the residence, they merge with the steel beams of the living area and continue toward the courtyard, creating a seamless interplay of light and shadow. The repetition of these linear elements reinforces a rhythmic flow that accompanies the user’s movement through the space.
